ISO/IEC 17025 Testing and calibration laboratories
ISO/IEC 17025 at a glance
- Published
- November 2017. ISO/IEC 17025:2017 is the current edition. It replaced the 2005 edition.
- Structure
- General, structural, resource, process and management-system requirements support technically valid laboratory results.
- Assessment route
- Laboratory accreditation assesses competence for a defined scope of testing, calibration or associated sampling.
- Accreditation status
- Verify the laboratory’s current status and detailed scope in the accreditation body’s directory.
- Ongoing assessment
- The accreditation body monitors continued competence through its assessment and reassessment programme.
- Assessment planning
- Methods, technical fields, locations and staff competence determine the assessment needs; headcount alone is insufficient.
- What the scope covers
- The activities, methods, measurement ranges and locations identified by the accreditation body.
- What to verify
- Check the scope together with the accreditation status, rather than relying on a certificate image alone.
- Working language
- Use documentation and reports that personnel and intended recipients can understand, subject to applicable requirements.
What ISO/IEC 17025 is
ISO/IEC 17025 addresses the competence, impartiality and consistent operation of testing and calibration laboratories. Accreditation assesses the laboratory for defined activities, methods and locations. The published accreditation scope identifies the work covered; it is not blanket approval of every service the laboratory offers.
What the standard requires
- Impartiality and confidentiality. Protect the integrity of laboratory decisions and the information entrusted by clients.
- Resources and competence. Ensure that personnel, facilities and equipment are suitable for the laboratory activities performed.
- Methods and measurement. Use appropriate methods, establish measurement traceability and address measurement uncertainty as relevant to the work.
- Validity and reporting. Monitor the validity of results and issue clear reports that reflect the work performed and any applicable decision rules.
- Management and improvement. Maintain a system supporting consistent laboratory work, review its effectiveness and address nonconforming work.

What shapes your investment
- Number of methods and technical fields in the scope, which is the main driver of assessor days and of how many technical assessors travel.
- Number of addresses, and whether the assessors have to travel to Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Baghdad or Basra, plus their international travel to reach Iraq.
- How many methods are standard methods needing verification and how many are in-house methods needing full validation.
- Headcount of analysts and signatories, because each one needs a competence and authorisation record per method.
- The proficiency testing schemes available for the field, their fees and how often each round runs.
- Condition of the equipment, and how much recalibration or replacement the equipment review finds.
- How well the existing management system supports the laboratory’s technical activities.
- Languages the management system and the work instructions are written in.
- Number of findings at the on site assessment and how much evidence is needed to close them.
The proposal names the scope, the deliverables and the dates before work starts.
